President William Ruto has been known to move around in a Lexus LX570 while campaigning for a couple of years.
Ruto stops using iconic Lexus LX570
It is from the sunroof of the black, KSh 18 million luxury SUV that Ruto launched a spirited fight for the presidency.
However, soon after becoming Kenya's fifth president, Ruto upgraded his wheels to ensure he was secure.
He left Kasarani, the most powerful man in Kenya, and switched to an armoured Toyota Land Cruiser.
Retired president Uhuru Kenyatta first used the armoured SUV. However, any lingering doubts that Ruto would still use his Lexus were put to rest when he visited Naivasha for a meeting with United Democratic alliance leaders.
Footage at the event depicted him alighting from a military helicopter before greeting an awaiting entourage of leaders and police chiefs.
Ruto’s Presidential Escort Unit, led by the lethal Pepita Ranka, led him to the Land Cruiser bearing the Kenyan and presidential flags.
Inside Ruto’s armoured Land Cruiser
Uhuru started using the armoured Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series, popularly known as the Land Cruiser V8, soon after taking office.
The vehicle's off-road capability helps the president easily access rugged terrain. In addition, it has run-flat tires, allowing it to move for a considerable distance despite having punctures.
The vehicle likely has the B7 protection level of armouring that stops various armour-piercing rounds fired from super high-velocity rifles, even sniper rifles.
Ruto’s vehicle could also have an air filtration system to guard against biological weapons. However, the Land Cruiser could not fully protect the president by itself, as it is sometimes accompanied by a runner car with electronic warfare technology.
